Last night was rather a mellow one by our go-for-it weekend standards, but we still managed to take in a few bars around Brixton, grabbing a few photos on the way.
First stop was the Effra Hall Tavern, a much loved boozer famed for its fabulous live jazz evenings.
The service was as leisurely as ever, but there’s still a lot to love about this pub which is tucked away from the main drag on Kellet Road, SW2.
One thing we couldn’t help noticing is how the demographics have really changed in the last five years or so. Brixton sure is a-changing.
The sad sight of the former Kaff Bar on Atlantic Road, once a hugely popular and affordable highlight of any weekend.
Closed in July 2015 after money-grabbing landlords tripled the rent, the premises have remained empty ever since.
A few doors down from Kaff can be seen this beacon for gentrification, The Wine Parlour. We didn’t go in.
A quick walk up Effra Road took us to the Effra Social, where there was a lively crowd busting out some moves to DJs Frank Jones and Big Bad Bal.
View from the turntables. The music was straight-down-the-line Rock n Roll, Punk and Rhythm and Blues. And that’s alright by us.
The final stop till 2am was the venerable Prince Albert on Coldharbour Lane which was as busy as ever, with DJs throwing down a party vibe.
On the Albert’s small but busy dancefloor.
